THE DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL
PHARMACOLOGY
Madras Medical College and Research Institute
Introduction:
The Department of Clinical Pharmacology is a specialty department,
introduced in 1982, as part of the Institute of Pharmacology, Madras
Medical College.
The department is headed by the Professor
of Clinical Pharmacology and has its ward in the
Government General Hospital , to which Madras Medical College is attached ,
wherein patients under observation can be admitted. The ward is staffed with a
senior medical officer, who is a qualified General Medicine Physician, and
nurses to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of patients.
The Institute of Pharmacology functions under the Director of Pharmacology
and trains students,
as well as research fellows for Ph.D.,
M.D. (Pharmacology), M.
Pharmacy (Pharmacology), besides students undergoing the graduate training in
Medicine.
The Institute
of Pharmacology also has Medicinal chemistry research center for work being
carried out on locally and nationally available medicinal herbs and plants (
studies on flavanoids).

Achievements & Projects in Brief :
 | Since the inception, several WHO and ICMR projects, both for
Pharmacodynamic and Kinetic studies were carried out successfully, eg.
Phase I &ii for Ivermectin. |
 | The Clinical Pharmacology department, in collaboration with ICMR, is the WHO Center
for research in Filariasis. The efficacy of the drug Ivermectin for the
treatment of filariasis was conclusively proved by studies conducted at this
centre. |
 | This department also collaborated with ICMR for carrying out studies on
antituberculous medicines. |
 | It is also the ICMR center for Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring in
India. |
 | The Ranbaxy Clinical Center of Excellence, from where many clinical
studies are coordinated, is under the care of the Clinical Pharmacolgy
Dept. |
 | The
Clinical Pharmacolgy Depatment has
several Senior Research Fellows for ICMR ( Medical Officers)in charge of
looking after looking after ICMR projects and a coordinator ( post graduate
in Pharmacy )for research
projects sponsored by Ranbaxy . |
 | It is the only centre in India for multi-centric studies
conducted by the NMRC, ( National Medical Research council ) ,
Clinical Trials and Epidemiological Research Unit , Ministry of Health
,Singapore. |
